Emi Winter

South Mountain

May 18 - June 30 2024

reception Saturday May 18

5-7 PM

For her first exhibition with the gallery, South Orange-based Oaxacan painter Emi Winter has made a group of paintings from observation of locations in the South Mountain Reservation, which is near her home and studio.

Each painting in South Mountain was made on site, typically in one direct session. The resulting works, titled with the date they were made, are neat convergences of time and space. Here is a painter, in a car, pulling off the side of the road and painting what is there. Winter uses the painting process to define a place within the larger space of the reservation.  Where natural and human-made environments converge upon and disrupt one another, Winter takes what she finds at face value, painting quickly and without judgement. Non-site to one becomes site to another.

"Painting is an urgent matter for me, a necessary process for understanding my environment and myself in it." -EW
