Weekly Outlook
Welcome to this week in art in LA or shall I say legendary New York artists extending their talons to LA. On deck we have a power line up Friday night in Culver City from Dorothy Iannone at Peres Projects to Erik Frydenborg at Cherry and Martin to Carroll Dunham at Blum and Poe to Adam Pendleton at Roberts and Tilton as well as the inaugural exhibition at Thinkspace's new space with Anthony Pontius. On Saturday Robert Lazzarini will be talking at Honor Fraser about his exhibition entitled "Guns, Knives, Brass Knuckles" curated by Jonathan T.D. Neil who is working on two book projects: How Art Works, a critical and opinionated general interest polemic aimed at combating the many misunderstandings about art's role in contemporary culture; and a currently untitled study that develops a theory of art in relationship to contemporary moral and political philosophy. Speaking of knives and guns, Carroll Dunham will be exhibiting a new series of paintings for the first time at Blum and Poe. "Often outfitted with knives or guns, his creatures have fought, shot and stabbed their way through uncertain terrain and imaginary floating planets. Yet activated with the suggestion of an uprooting or impending fall." I must admit I cannot wait to see Dunham's exhibition in context with Adam Pendleton, Robert Lazarini and Dorothy Iannone. A New York abstractionist who had grandfathered so many artists today, an oldie but goodie who's work I have always relished at his New Museum retrospective in 2003 and exhibitions at Barbara Gladstone. I'm curious to see the works in a new context and its conversation with the concurrent exhibitions. Lastly, Saturday night April 10th is Northeast Los Angeles' Second Saturday with most galleries open till 10 pm. So get out there, check it out, and ENJOY! - Alex Staiger, Editor Editor's Picks
