Weekly Outlook
The theme of this week's editor's picks is, "Building Awareness." Many exhibitions opening this Saturday address concepts of one's place in a larger environment. At LAXART: For the Wild is the collaborative manifestation of Kelly Poe’s intimate correspondences with seven activists. In her letters, Poe asked them to describe the places that keep them sane, to tell her what time of day to visit these sites so that she could capture the location’s undisturbed beauty as it existed in their mind’s eye. In addition to the collection of images exhibited here, the artist produced a handmade, oversized book. At Thomas Solomon Gallery: In an exhibition of new work by Mitchell Syrop entitled, Bifurcated Life, the artist presents a series of 28 images, derived from notebook pages. The work evolves through a series of statements sometimes repeating themselves while transmuting in the process and eventually pushing the boundaries of language and representation. Written from an interior perspective, the work resounds with existential tones that reflect on the dialectic of writing as creation and the embodiment of the artist’s divided public and private personas. At Favorite Goods: The Real Conquests redirects the gaze to the peripheral, putting the viewer behind the lens or in the shadows. The overlooked object is turned into the subject and portrayed with a simplistic ambiguity, creating new myths, understandings, and a nostalgia for what is lost even while being in it’s presence. Featuring work by Milano Chow, Julie Grosche, Andres Laracuente, and Van Hanos. Peace. ;) Editor's Picks
