Weekly Outlook
Last week: undeniable weariness about the art market was largely overcome by sanguineness upon seeing familiar faces and new art. Several artists told me of the increasing "preciousness" of art in Chelsea that seems of a different time. There are some happy surprises I discovered: downstairs on W 22nd street, check out Raul deNieves's show at Newman Popiashvili Gallery for a seamless use of the gallery space that embodies a certain form of optimism often seen at Whitney Biennials. Another outstanding show is Franklin Evans at Sue Scott gallery in the Lower East Side. Franklin says the show is the basis for a long-term project, which, judging by the quality of this show, is good to hear. This week!: Gagosian keeps it classy with Cy Twombly and Sally Mann at tonight's opening at their uptown location. On Tuesday, Cooper Union opens their new building (a well-intentioned, computer-aided design, that somehow resulted in a facade that threatens to transform into Optimus Prime at any moment, but not really in a good way -- not to sound critical -- I mean, it's still great to see a new building with some creativity at work). Thursday and Friday have the most openings, and Saturday is the first LIC Gallery Opening Night -- a good chance to see all the LIC galleries in one night and dine at a local spot. Editor's Picks
