Weekly Outlook
This week Performa 09 continues with performances across the city. Thursday is the busiest night, including shows at ATM (which now shares Freight + Volume's space on 24th street), and Team and Glowlab in Soho. That's just a small sample of what's going on -- check the website and list below for everything. Last week, Roberta Smith's lecture was inspiring to watch and gave everyone who attended a look into the thinking and story behind a great critic who's useful, thoughtful work has weight and credibility built on personal thought and experience. Also last week, Paul McCarthy's new show opened at Hauser & Wirth on 69th street with sexually charged work, most effective in the smaller graphite drawings of Snow White. While Uptown, I took the chance to tour Upper East Side galleries down through 57th street. One artist I ran into characterized the Upper East Side as "not as conceptual" as Chelsea, and that seems true; however, there is real visual strength and beauty in a lot of the shows that make for worthwhile visits through more traditional mediums. As the editor of this list, I must share the somewhat embarrassing admission of, having missed some openings last week, searching youtube to get a sense of what I had missed. It did not take long to realize again that text, images, and video can not compare to the actual experience of seeing artwork in person. Accordingly, Artcards seeks to enable and enhance (not replace) your personal experience by making it easier to go see art. If you have a minute, please reply to this email by answering: what seems difficult to you that prevents you from going out to see art and/or go to art openings? Your insight will be used to help make Artcards a better service for even more people like you. Hope you can make it out this week! Editor's Picks
