San Francisco
Artcards brings you to art May 15, 2012

Weekly Outlook

Special Note!

This week Art Cards will be at the artMRKT fair in San Francisco. We are taking our place as a media sponser as an opportunity to share with the fair going crowd the names and info of various new/alternative venues and projects.

To this end we have (in collaboration with the featured projects) produced a tote bag to be given away for free. Come see us first when you visit the fair, and proudly collect the various other swag/infomatics in this handy tote. In select bags there will be (randomly) zines/work/? /pencils/information representing some of the featured spaces. We’ve produced 200+ bags, so its first come first serve.

Reminder

We are slowly formulating plans for our local Art Cards Review content. The recent preview of In Protest at the Berkeley Art Museum managed to spur some well thought out comments, which is certainly one of our goals.

Curiously Direct Picks

Stephen Wirtz//Paul Schiek: dead men don't look like me= Initially off-put by my first glance, and certainly nearly missed after my experience with the main room show at Wirtz (see below), this subtle body of work grew on me into something substantial. A well edited group of found, distressed, reprinted mugshots make a strange case for the interconnectivity between masculinity and crime. An excellent show, worth a patient, focused visit.

Violet Strays//Carrie Hott= Online exhibition of a single work, an illustrated timeline of the 'desk'. Perfectly suited to this odd online one-work format, it is on a virtual very long sheet of yellowed paper. The process of the object's connection to its use accompanying the transformation of the office worker through time is well presented. As someone keen on the arcane and affixed to a desk, I love it.

And, don't miss the California College of the Arts MFA Exhibition, open till the 19th, with plenty of promising new work.
