Weekly Outlook
Deep breath. The art fairs are over, graduate show season is winding down (still have to make it Stanford’s MFA show…) And yet there are exciting things to do this week. There is a screening at SFMOMA on Thursday as part of their ‘stay open late with music and free food and activities once a month’ thing which will ‘add historic perspective to the Descriptive Acts exhibition by showcasing seminal narrative experiments made between 1975 and 1992.’ Works by John Smith, Jeanne C. Finley, and Gary Hill will be screened, considering the strength of Descriptive Acts parts 1 and 2, its bound to be good. And, opening the same day is International Orange, a huge, ambitious exhibition organized by the For Site Foundation celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge. Featured artists include Abelardo Morell, Allison Smith, Anandamayi Arnold, Andy Freeberg, Bill Fontana, Camille Utterback, Cornelia Parker, Courtney Lain, David Liittschwager, Doug Hall, Jeannene Przyblyski, Kate Pocrass, Mark Dion and Dana Sherwood, Pae White, and Stephanie Syjuco. What I’ve seen of Allison Smith’s installation and Stephanie Syjuco’s ‘orange’ shop is very promising. There is tons of info about the events/directions/hours etc at http://www.for-site.org/ . Finally, I would like to take a sec to say ‘hello’ to any new subscribers to this email, especially those we met at artMRKT over the weekend. If you, (or really anyone reading this) are so inclined, let us know what we can do to better your bay area art experience. If your requests line up with things we want and are willing to do, we’ll certainly do our best. Curiously Direct Though both shows lack artist or curatorial statements, I would like to recommend Important Projects Gallery II//Paul Cowan: New Work= A ridiculous show, with sound, scent, and incredibly 'stupid' framed works. But, in this case, its stupid in the way I very much like, refreshingly simple. Recommended, especially in conjunction with: Important Projects Gallery 1//Brian Morello: Notes on a Prequel= In the small space, , a very adept installation of painted walls and flat(ish) works, best for its small touches on the walls and creative set of ink marks, often on glass or marked into foil... I was very impressed with the totality of the show, and with the simple textures and decisions in the work on Morello's website. A good pair of shows. Facebook.com/curiouslydirect And a guilty suggestion, Art Cards’ very own Jackie Im hosts a movie night at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center (388 Ninth Street, Suite 290, $5, 7-9pm) and this month’s film is Abbas Kiarostrami’s Ten (Kiarostami, 2002) as chosen by artist Zina Al-Shukri.
