Artcards brings you to art June 12, 2012

Weekly Outlook

NOTE: This week Art Basel opens in Switzerland -- if you are there, RSVP to visit with the Artcards Team at the show.

It's summer as all get-out. This usually means a bit of a slow down in the galleries, but though there are certainly less shows opening each week there are still plenty of great events and exhibitions to see. If anything, it is maybe a little easier to shake the wheat from the chaff. (I’m in a bit of a mood for idioms and aphorisms, apologies...)

One space continuing to present interesting programming is Royal NoneSuch Gallery in Oakland.

Wednesday there is a screening of Pina Bausch’s excellent dance work, Café Muller. Subject of the recent 3D film by Wim Wenders, ‘Pina’, the recently deceased Bausch had a unique relationship between herself and her company, and an innovative and raw style. Additionally, short works that presaged and influenced her practice will be screened.

And this weekend George Pfau’s residency begins at the same space. He will be there on-site pursuing various projects and research, with open studio hours Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 1-6pm between June 15 through July 6, 2012. His practice explores the human body, viewed through the lens of the ‘zombie’. There will be a talk later in the month, but for now, the chance to visit this sort of ‘pop-up studio’ is exciting.

Curiously Direct
No particular picks this week, but I'd suggest attempting to attend one of the myriad Southern Machine Exposure Project events, scattered across private residences in the bay area between now and June 30th. Reservations are required for each, making it a bit of a hassle (in my opinion), but there are tons of great artists participating. For more info, go to http://soex.org/southernmachine.html
