Weekly Outlook
There is an exciting opening this week at a space you may have yet to visit, Alter Space. The show is called (and is about?) What’s Left Behind; the walls have been transformed from the normal white into something different, a sort of stage set of an abandoned house into which the various artists’ work will be installed. It is unclear to what degree this strange contextualization will affect what work the artists produce for the show, or if it will be what the artists normally do with the staging meant only as a way to transform how the work is read – both of which are exciting possibilities. The artists include Zina Al-Shukri, Alexis Arnold, William Emmert, Julian Farmer-Bowers, Marcel R. Patzwald, Meghan Martin, Maja Ruznic, Esther Samuels-Davis, Cianna Valley, Imin Yeh, and COLPA PRESS, plus the meta-work of the curators who papered over the walls, and the music/performance of various individuals during the show’s two month run. It opens Friday, and is at 1158 Howard Street in San Francisco. Note A little late in the day this week, but its for a good reason. We are getting going a bit as far as content for Art Cards Review, with the recent interview with Claudia Altman-Siegel, a review (to be posted in the next day or so) of the 50+ artist exhibition documentO at Krowswork in Oakland (it’s a brief show, don’t miss it), and another interview on the way later this week. That’s all fine and good, but we would like your help. If you have ideas for content, please let us know! And, if you manage to read any of what is posted, let us know what you think by posting comments etc. Oh, I suppose it would be nice if you’d tell a friend or two about our little site. Curiously Direct Picks CCASAC//Chris Fraser: The Air Around Us= A solo show by this local favorite in the far distant land of Sacramento. (…) In this nearly ideal setting the installation produces its scattering of light very effectively; a quiet, ephemeral drawing. In the back room, there is an attractive film screening in which strangely warped color and light effects appear and retreat. A strong show, it will be exciting to see where Fraser's work goes next. Walter and McBean Gallery//Lin Yilin: Golden Journey= A pretty good show of video and installation by this Chinese artist. The highlights are a series of performances in which Yilin rolled on his side through various iconic San Francisco areas, with a slow moving group of people walking in front of him (I was one of them).
