Artcards brings you to art October 17, 2012

Weekly Outlook

Vancouver! Jackie Im and I, Aaron Harbour, the editors of Art Cards SF, spent about five days in Vancouver (two free ones and three at a conference about ‘Institutions by Artists) and are a bit behind as we try to sort through what we saw. Something will be written about this experience, but to summarize:

Vancouver is a great city for the arts, with a long, proud history of artist run spaces who keep very good archives and histories, something our Bay Area needs to do a better job of. There is a strong focus on arts publishing which is exciting as well. Though I was led to this or that exhibition coinciding with the conference, things I wandered into at the advice of friends (artist Lauren Marsden, who runs DECOY magazine, where much writing on our trip will also appear) such as a library speakeasy Solder and Sons. A visit to Vancouver is highly recommended, though I missed the Bay Area's fantastic food.

Curiously Direct Picks

Here’s the trouble, I can recommend heartily some of the Vancouver shows, but missed this week’s round of openings. I do recommend making it to the show at Queens Nails opening Saturday, I like where this is going, with work by Kate Bonner, Christine Ancalmo, and Cybele Lyle, all of whose work we like.

Advance Warning

We the Art Cards editors are curators, and will be participating in the Miami NADA art fair. To help us get there, we will be conducting an art auction, likely November 2nd. It will be fun and full of good work for sale with the proceeds going 100 percent to the artists. Information to follow soon, but so far we've quite an exciting group of participating artists.
