Weekly Outlook
This is going to be a bit of a (lengthy) shameless plug, so please bear with me, I won't do this often. My fellow editor and I are organizing an art auction to help fund a larger project. AuCTION will be held at MacArthur B Arthur Gallery this Saturday, November 3rd from 5-9pm. There will be live and silent auctions, with works by: Carey Lin, Sarah Hotchkiss, Carissa Potter, Jenny Odell, Cybele Lyle, Jonah Susskind, Anthony Discenza, Emma Spertus, Carrie Hott, Joseph Thomas, Nicole Kotara, Amy M. Ho, Brandon Drew Holmes, Dana Hemenway, Hillary Wiedemann, Luca Antonucci, Kelly Lynn Jones, Aaron Harbour, Im + Harbour, Facundo Arganaraz, Kevin Clarke, Adam Thorman, Willis Stork, Jenny Sharaf, Christine M. Peterson, Julio Cesar Morales, Chris Duncan, Aaron Finnis, Lee Hunter, Jerome Reyes, James Cordas, Elizabeth Moran, Emily Tareila, Aimee Friberg, Alicia Escott, Leora Lutz, Christopher West, Baylee Hikawa, Mark Taylor, Joel Dean, Farley Gwazda AND, the artists will get 100 percent of the proceeds! (our plan is to borrow the money for our project and then give the amount in full to the artists… an auction first?) Free to browse, great snacks and drinks on offer, preview the sale at: et-al-auction.tumblr.com and, the Facebook event page ->LINK MacArthur B Arthur 4030 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Oakland, CA 94609 Pshew. Curiously Direct Picks YBCA//William Cordova: Smoke Signals: viviendo pa’ la ciudad= A very intriguing mixed media exhibition by Cordova in the usually more compelling upstairs gallery (lets hope this trend continues, all things considered). Each of the many elements, ranging from a large architectural video installation marrying a documentary on Tupac Shakur with one about Túpac Amaru, through a long series of similar minimalist collage works, has a complicated content underlying aesthetically successful elements. Least interesting were a large group of drawing/painting/collages; though attractive and detailed they seemed the most commercial/least risky of the works presented. But the aforementioned video, a series of eerie polaroids, and a strange triptych of slide projectors served the exhibition's project well; a sort of half-reveal/half-obfuscation. A great show. Jessica Silverman//Conrad Ruiz: Juice= Solo show of paintings by Ruiz. Here his pop style has been redirected inward/outward, the works, close ups on advertisement images of liquid (energy or 'performance' beverages) both point to illusion upon which such marketing relies and manages to read as abstractions, and in a way, landscape. A good show, and an interesting direction for this artist whose previous work struck me as far too eager to please. And I want to mention that a trip to the Headlands this weekend led me to see the excellent goings on in Zachary Royer Sholtz and (former Art Cards editor and studio mate of mine) Emma Spertus's huge, beautiful studios. Lots of experimentation going on, and some exciting results, so if you get a chance before the end of November I highly recommend a visit. Editor's Picks
