Weekly Outlook
A last blast of summer weather, after which we'll be right back into the mild and grey. This week has plenty of good things to see, ranging from screenings to lectures to exhibitions. Kadist and the Goethe Intitut are hosting two nights of projects by Christoph Schlingensief, beginning Wednesday at Kadist with a screening of Paul Poet's film "Ausländer raus! (Foreigners out), Schlingensief's Container" on Wednesday. Lecture wise, there's a double dose of Uta Barth, at CCA on Thursday and SFAI on Friday, but as exciting is a talk by Simon O'Sullivan also at SFAI earlier on Friday discussing his heady book "On the Production of Subjectivity: Five Diagrams of the Finite-Infinite Relation." As for exhibitions, I'm excited to see Miriam Böhm's Before in Front opening at Ratio 3 on Friday, and to catch the gallery hours of Kate Bonner and Sean Talley's shows at Important Projects. Curiously Direct Picks Pro Arts//Cybele Lyle: 2 x 2 Solos= A solo show of Lyle's work which takes the physical manifestation of her practice in a new direction. Two works (a nimble job of editing by artist and curator), one was a book produced for the show containing new collages which fold interior and exterior spaces together; it was well laid out, and the way the works interacted with the backs of and the meeting point between pages was nice. The other piece was a large sculptural installation which took her interactions with photographed spaces (normally in collage form as in the book or via projected video) much further, extending the cut and folded spaces into large, three dimensional forms which floated out from the walls at various angles. Hard to describe, this is a must see. Lyle's practice continues to move in its particular direction, twisting site, space, and surpassing expectations. Editor's Picks
