Weekly Outlook
As the last day of the month will drag itself onto Friday, openings will be a bit spread out this month. Noteworthy are the new shows at the Berkeley Art Museum. The curatorial theme here is a bit routine, but the works should be exciting, ranging from Magritte to Tino Segal. Also opening is MATRIX 245, with a group of Rudolf de Crignis’s subtle near monochromes of blue and grey. The notable absence of Mr. McGee’s huge retrospective will add a counterpoint in ones memory to what will be possibly a more subtle set of shows. One show closing soon and not to be missed is Marine Hugonnier & Taha Belal: Disrupt at Highlight Gallery. Both of the artists’ work is doubly engaging as pure visuals of color and geometry and as deeply invested in a difficult political address. It closes on February 2nd. QUESTIONNAIRE: This week (tomorrow) we’ll hear answers to the questionnaire from San Francisco artist Dana Hemenway. ->LISTEN TO PAST EPISODES ->SUBSCRIBE Curiously Direct Pick Romer Young Gallery//Amanda Curreri: The Aunque= Great solo show by Curreri of paintings, video, sculpture, and (eventually, January 30th) performance. The show engages each of these materials whole-heartedly; the paintings are beautiful paintings, a large hand-dyed flag is a precisely made thing... and though as single objects the pieces all work, the whole paints an obscure picture which takes time to tease out. Or rather, to begin to unfurl; there is not a simple one-to-one with a set of ready symbols here. Instead, a mixture of strangeness and color begin to outline a process of personalization and deliberateness. A must see. Editor's Picks
