Artcards brings you to art February 5, 2013

Weekly Outlook

How was your weekend? Mine was great, thanks for asking. I was in Los Angeles at Printed Matter's first LA Art Book Fair, which is to say, between making my way to ~20 galleries, I managed to visit the fair on three separate occasions. Still, I didn't see everything, because despite reports to the contrary print is live and well, especially in the arts, and there were endless tables of gems to sift through.

Perhaps this is due to fetishizing the physicality of ephemera in an age of conceptual art. Whatever the reason, zine/handmade culture, theory, photography, publication-as-art etc. all found themselves heavily represented at the fair. Highlights?
Following are a few presses to keep an eye out for.

Magazines (some of which make books)
Fillip
Mousse
Afterall

Consistently very good things
Primary Information
Sequence
Sternberg Press

Local favorites at the fair
Needles and Pens
Land and Sea
Colpa Press
Little Paper Planes

I've taken up enough of your inbox sifting time, but before I go, I must mention Colter Jacobsen and Frances Stark @ Paule Anglim (opening today, tuesday!), which looks like it may be good, and at SFAI's McBean Gallery on Friday, Gutai Historical Survey and Contemporary Response. I'd much rather they had skipped the 'contemporary response' part and just focused on this relatively unknown group, but still I'm excited to see the show.
