Weekly Outlook
We at Art Cards are quite excited about a few things opening this week, including the show Supra Natural at Berkeley Central Arts Passage, organized by Kala Art Institute and curated by Amanda Curreri (whose recent solo stands out as a highlight of the year so far…), with work by Bessma Khalaf, Carrie Hott, Elizabeth Mooney, George Pfau, Mayumi Hamanaka, Sarah Fontaine. Also exciting is the current episode of ‘Only a Signal Show Shown’ at Southern Exposure. Where as the second part one real standout work, we expect the one open now and the next (opening Friday) to have some gems in them. But, we can’t help but be extra psyched for Will Rogan’s show Thursday at Altman Siegel. Rogan’s peculiar objects integrate photography and appropriated, archival images into both flat works and sculpture. There is a sense of humor and an undercurrent of ‘art about art’ concept woven throughout, and hopefully the show will include some of his wonderful mobile objects. QUESTIONNAIRE This week: Artist and educator Elizabeth Bernstein. Subscribe -> Listen -> Curiously Direct Picks Southern Exposure//Only a Signal Shown: Week 2= Part two of an interesting series of brief exhibitions at SoEx in which the gallery is given up to a set of large scale video works. To be blunt, I didn't like most of what was presented... to give an example, I find Kate Gilmore's works a bit reductive and lacking some ineffable polish as videos. Without going through the other videos I didn't like, I'd like to skip ahead to something I really liked: Hannah Ireland and Anne Vought's work (as Double Zero) 'Cha Cha Changes'. Their previous works as a duo revolved around various performative gestures of restriction or forced blurrings of each other's body and control. This film has elements of that, but focuses on the two of their faces as they take turns playing a sort of bizarre dress up. A mixture of paint, carrot juice, fabric, q-tips, flowers etc. are applied to each other's faces and the resulting video is exciting to watch as things get progressively weird. I love this video. This show has closed but suggestion: find the artists online, ask to see this work. Editor's Picks
