Weekly Outlook
This week… lets see… I’m not sure what to see sometimes. I’ve mentioned it before but it bears repeating: that sometimes there are too many potentially good shows opening the same day is a good thing for our little scene. But before pointing to a few of the great things opening Friday, I want to take a second to note a consistent failure exhibition-scheduling-wise. First Thursday: SF openings, first Friday: Oakland ones. Easy enough? Apparently not, with multiple SF galleries having their openings first Friday this week. This reinforces the idea that art in Oakland is a bridge too far, or that Art Murmur is bad (it is) AND that’s all there is in Oakland (it isn’t) So, please, if you plan on going to what look like good shows at The Popular Workshop (Ben Barretto) and the Wattis Institute show curated by Will Brown (w/ Abraham Cruzvillegas, Ian Wallace, Koki Tanaka & Ryan Gander among others), please consider not missing the opening at Royal NoneSuch Gallery in Oakland Curated by Christina Linden, Mere Top will have works by Alice Cohen, Amy Patton, Anne Walsh, Antje Majewski, Chris Vargas, Cybele Lyle, Delia Gonzalez, Greg Youmans, Juliane Solmsdorf, Mathilde Ter Heijne, Torreya Cummings and should be quite great. Curiously Direct Picks Haven’t reviewed it yet, but the Will Rogan show at Altman Siegel is quite great… also: Paule Anglim//Frances Stark: MEMENTO MORI: towards a compendium of disseminations= Solo show of strange mini-installation like objects mixing elements of painting and collage into a set of physical scrap books of sorts. The interplay of symbols and language was engaging and arcane/mysterious at times. I look forward to visiting the space again to dig deeper. Paule Anglim//Colter Jacobsen: Scanning the long sleeves of the shore= Great little solo show of a peculiar body of small, framed flat works which, judging by it being nearly sold out, was well received. (…) I look forward to the artist's next large scale exhibition, though maybe this small room/small work format suits his minor gestures as well as any institution. curiously direct on facebook Editor's Picks
