Weekly Outlook
With the clock about to leap forward, lets just call it and say we’ve escaped the deathly grips of another bay area winter and are headed full-steam-ahead into spring. I’m looking forward to the Creative Growth Art Center Group Exhibit at Park Life with Art Cards favorite John Hiltunen, plus Aurie Ramirez, Dan Miller, Donald Mitchell, Dwight Mackintosh, Jacob Sockness, John Martin, Ray Vickers, William Scott, and William Tyler. And (it’s a season for ands), there is a benefit sale for Martina }{ Johnston gallery on Saturday with some pretty great works in it (I’m eying the Sonya Rapoport and Anne Walsh works…) And at the Popular Workshop, Ben Barretto’s recently opened Self Help has some gems in it. Made up of three bodies of work, the standouts are large abstract paintings that barely conceal the very performative process of their making. And that show at the Wattis has been getting rave reviews… and there’s a 24 hour exhibition at the Kadist with Christian Jankowski, Edgardo Aragon, Guy Ben Ner, Jim Goldberg, Pavel Wolberg, Wael Shawky opening Wednesday… and... Questionnaire This week: artist Chris Fraser. Curiously Direct Pick Important Projects//Bailey Hikawa: Emperor! Emperor! Emperor!= Great solo show in the larger gallery 2 of paintings and sculpture.(...)The show at Important felt extremely well edited. Two small abstract paintings in pale colors boiled down the best of what was happening in the piles of canvases in her space; a fake marble flooring made an already bizarre space both odder and more intimate, a sculpture garden with three mossed over geometric objects.
