Weekly Outlook

Adobe books: an underutilized resource buried under decades of history, which has sat there obstinately as the neighborhood around it has changed dramatically. Home to a gallery, countless performances, odd regulars, and books... pile after pile of books.

I moved here in the late 90’s and would frequent the mission for the food and drinks and thrift stores and bookstores. Most of that is still there amidst the swirl of new businesses, lofts, people in yoga gear etc.

Lets stop the nostalgia train just shy of wishing things were the way they were. You want the mission the way it was? Hang out in front of the 16th street Bart station; the vibe is nearly unchanged. But if I’m going to wish for something, its that the best of the old not be either razed or kept simply as memorial.

There are plans to save Adobe from being some retail this or that. They involve an unrealistic business model put forward by motley crew of community organizers, small businesses and well-wishers. That they are caring to try deserves serious consideration by all involved in the art community to add our money and voice to the efforts.

So, consider their idea, and maybe contribute money outright or by some art from an online auction of pretty amazing works by artists like Mitzi Peterson, Kelly Lynn Jones, Chris Cobb, Colter Jacobsen and Chris Duncan.
