Weekly Outlook
DATE CORRECTION: CCA's MFA exhibition opens on Thursday, May 16 and SFAI's MFA reception is Friday, May 17. Truly too much to see this week. Just back from my little trip to New York with only a short time to breath before three MFA shows and two art fairs. These will all house there modicum of hidden gems, waiting for attentive eyes to pick them out of the noise and bluster. Wednesday: Representation and its Discontents, w/ John Menick, Pedro Reyes, Althea Thauberger, Bruce Conner, with “Special Opening night addition: Artist and Chez Panisse chef Jerome Waag will serve "Clams a la Hiquily" from 6 to 7pm” at Kadist SF. + a Chris Marker screening at CCA Wattis. (impossible to do both?) Thursday How will we make it through all of this? persistance... ArtPadSF opening night, the ‘cooler’ art fair which this year has quite a number of exciting galleries exhibiting along with some less so. A tip for art fairs in general: Go with your gut the first pass, if the space looks filled with terrible work, move on. Finish a first pass, and let your memory and whims guide what you examine closer. The same goes for artMRKT, at the unfortunate (for non-car owners) location of Fort Mason. Mostly the older, established spaces here… look for Park Life andEverGold’s team-up space, and nice quiet moments (last year’s highlight for me was a brilliant little Milton Avery). I want to say more about fairs in general and the Bay Area’s iteration, another time perhaps... Thursday is also the opening of CCA's MFA exhibition. Friday TWO grad shows, Berkeley and SFAI. Both shouldn’t be missed with students whose work I am excited about. That being said, will have seen 70+grad displays and 100+fair booths the previous day... SFAI Graduate exhibition at the Mint building: for better or worse, given a bit of a theme to go along with its odd venue, this year’s show is again very very short, with only this week/end to catch it. Most of the work will be a mix of disappointing and mediocre (I saw many cringe-worthy things at open studios), but there will be some surprises I hope. Saturday Little Paper Planes Shop opening event! Which, will be more of a party (with fellow Art Carder Jackie Im and I DJing..) Sunday Sleep...brunch...sleep... Editor's Picks
