Weekly Outlook
What a week. If you are anything like me, you saw some great things, you missed as much as you saw, you are not entirely sure where those people in the crowds came from, you talked too much and to too many of the same people, you need a break… But lets not be negative nathaniels about it all. The city of San Francisco threw big, crowded messes at us all last week, lets slow it down a little, do somethings a lil’ more intimate… Friday: S.H.E.D. Projects: MOWOM LIVE, a one night project by Bailey Hikawa and Erin Jane Nelson Saturday: Important Projects, with McIntyre Parker in Gallery 1 and Sarah McMenimen in Gallery 2. And a new space, n/a in Oakland, with Christopher Füllemann: your motion says you’re in the mood Sunday: Michael Dean nnnhnnh nnh nnhnnnhu nnhnhn at Pied-à-terre. His recent Herald St. show looks incredible, I’m excited to see what he brings into the special space of Pied. QUESTIONNAIRE Have you been listening? Most recent was George Pfau, before that, Anthony Discenza ... with new episodes soon featuring Brandon Drew Holmes, Jerome Reyes, Zoe Taleporos... contact me to join the crowd at mrharbour@gmail.com Curiously Direct Picks Swarm Gallery//Cybele Lyle, Leigh Merrill, Emma Spertus: Fictional Familiar= Three person show of work "creat[ing] an allegory of perspective and sense of place". Spertus has a large installation in the small room which takes up much of the space with a wooden stair-step object upon which are presented a number of odd, (re)constructed objects in various materials; this is the best single exhibition of the artist's practice I've seen, her peculiar way of echoing the world around her here feels fully realized and fun to explore. Merrill's carefully edited urban scenes are best as a group of concurrently hung pictures making up a single long stretch of half-real city. Lyle's practice is also well represented with both flat work and a large scale (small in comparison with some past work) sculptural installation which takes the folded perspectives of her photography/2D work out into the world. (note: I work with Lyle at my lil' gallery) This is purportedly the last show at this gallery, one which I did not visit enough; here's looking forward to what the proprietor does next.
