Weekly Outlook
SFMOMA is on the move! Which, in a sense is exciting, but in practice… well… Okay, I’ll say it. Shows at the Contemporary Jewish Museum about ‘100 Years of the Spiritual in Modern Art’ and one at the Asian Art Museum about ‘beauty in Asian and Western art’ seem a little too obvious, pointing to a simplistic, narrow idea of what each museum is about. Imagine these shows replaced by challenges to expectation, new commissions, political risk… I’m very much looking forward to the SECA show(s), with each artist working outside of the institution. My impression is that these exhibitions will be in unexpected places on both sides of the bay. This may be just me, but what I want from this important institution at a critical juncture, as it prepares to grow the museum while locking down massive amounts of exhibition space to its large new donations, is some weirdness. Be risky! Off-putting! You clearly matter to the city (as witnessed by the massive attendance to the closing events) and you’ve got our attention. Now, surprise us. Editor's Picks
