Weekly Outlook
While a great number of older, established galleries are conglomerating in the Potrero Hill area, what is missing there so far is anything new… BUT, as is often the case in the bay area, there is much happening beyond such hub locations. In the next few weeks, I’ll share information on new spaces popping into our exciting scene. These are not reviews of them as I'm like you and haven't been to most of them; I'll simply post some of their about pages and their urls for further investigation. Book & Job, 838 Geary http://book-job.com/ “Established in the summer of 2012, Book & Job Gallery is a space fully committed to the advancement of all forms of contemporary art, with a focus on providing quality local artists access to a wide range of promotional tools and means of exposure. Located in the eclectic Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco, Book & Job seeks to connect artists of all different styles and mediums more directly to their patrons and visitors, both locally and abroad.” A Simple Collective’s ASC Projects /// #104 on Treat at 18th Street, San Francisco http://asimplecollective.com/ “A Simple Collective is a passionate group of contemporary artists and arts professionals dedicated to supporting access and independence in the arts while promoting the San Francisco Bay Area as a hub of unique and innovative art activity in the international art scene.” (the current show includes work by Elizabeth Axtman, Tim Roseborough, and Art Cards favorite Chris Vargas) Curiously Direct Picks Alter Space//Practicing to Pretend= A group show of 2 and 3 D works; a mixed bag which never quite cohered. Evan Nesbit's paintings were nice (I could stand to see more of them), but the standouts here are a wide array of works by Jonah Susskind. 5 (or six?) works on different scales and in different materials, each with its only strange internal logic and humor. A group of climbing holds become the nodes for a geometric drawing; a wind chime made of clear acrylic hovers high overhead near a skylight... the show is okay but Susskind's pieces are specifically a must see.
