Weekly Outlook

Two great looking shows open Friday, one big, one small. Lets start with the small one. At n/a in Oakland, Bon/anza 3: dress for this, the fourth collaboration between artists Conrad Guevara, Lindsay Tully, and Lana Williams.  In what I considered a pretty lackluster SFAI graduate show in a difficult (impossible?) location, these artists chose to band together to show work in group show form in a separated room. A sculptor, film maker and a painter among them, the room was a bold statement of the power of collaborative, considered exhibition making in an otherwise mess of a show. I’m excited to see what they’ve arranged for this great space.

And the larger one: Dissident Futures at YBCA, a sprawling group exhibition, “an investigation into possible alternative futures, particularly those that question or overturn conventional notions of innovation in biological, social, environmental, and technological structures.” In it will be work by a number of artists I’m excited about including Kamau Amu Patton and The Otolith Group among others.

I’m going to try to make it to both…
