Weekly Outlook
Its a busy week, we're in the heart of the exhibition season so the next few days will serve up an embarrassment of riches. This (first) Thursday, tons of shows are opening at 49 Geary, including a new show at Altman Siegel. Sean McFarland will be having his first exhibition at Stephen Wirtz. It will be interesting to see if gallery and artist play it safe, or if the change pushes his practice into new places. That night Kalup Linzy will be speaking at CCA in San Francisco, and its hard to imagine this being 'run of the mill'... Linzy's early works, many of which are on youtube, still feel resonant, so a chance to see new work discussed is not to be missed. Too much to say... lets see... a series of films which explore the X rating are screening at YBCA, including Last Tango in Paris and Henry:Portrait of a Serial Killer... the first show at CULT, the new gallery where Queens Nails used to be opens Saturday... It'll be a fun week. Curiously Direct Picks As yet unreviewed, but Beatik Meteors at di Rosa in Napa is great and very worth the trip, curator Amy Owen did a fantastic job. Pied-à-terre//Michael Snow: Solar Breath (Northern Caryatids)= A single video of a house breathing. This is one of the best things I've seen all year, and has one more day to see it (November 10th 12-3pm). Nicely projected, its simple, powerful visual narrative is emphasized by a wonderful soundtrack: the sounds of a curtain batting against a screen winds and of a dinner being eaten off-screen. These two separate registers of life happening independently... I am glad to have this image/experience rolling around in my mind to be thought about some more. I could watch it for hours, highly recommended. Editor's Picks
