Weekly Outlook
With the town mostly quiet due to a combination of tryptophan and Miami, here’s a combination of closings and events to distract from the constant stream of pics of pies and galas: Yang Fudong: Estranged Paradise, Works 1993–2013 at the Berkeley Museum of Arts is closing on Sunday. There are several series of photo works in the show, but the standouts are the elaborate video installations. Though I think some of the works are needlessly complicated, and a set of three shorter pieces on little TVs are quite successful despite their relative simplicity, the rooms full of projection are splendid. Throughout there is a strange film noir or David Lynch-like feeling. Not to be missed. Something to be excited about if you are a fan of experimental film is the Canyon Cinema Pop-up at the Kadist. Opening Wednesday and going on for a few weeks, there will be several screenings and events but possibly more exciting is 150 titles from the Canyon Cinema catalogue will be available to be borrowed on DVD for a week at a time. I’m excited to browse and use this unique opportunity to get into some practices I’m as yet unfamiliar with. And one more thing, which I won’t be attending though I contributed a bit to a text (I’ll be at Little Paper Planes’ holiday party, servin’ a cocktail or two), the excellent show by Bonanza’s Conrad Guevara, Lana Williams and Lindsay Tully will be releasing a publication on Friday at n/a. With tons of talented people having contributed something connected to collaboration it (the publication) should be a great compliment to a wonderful exhibition closing that evening. Editor's Picks
