Artcards brings you to art February 25, 2014

Weekly Outlook

Its the end of this short month, so openings are few and far between, with two I recommend highly, Thursday Julian Hoeber at fused space (a project I've not been to yet), and Friday Kirk Stoller at Romer Young Gallery, a gallery I love but often overlook.

I'll post my long, very positive review of the current So Ex show below, and if you've not seen it yet there is an event with Carrie Hott and Laura Steenberge titled 'Fathoming a Cave' which I imagine will be great.

Curiously Direct Pick
Southern Exposure//White Hot Lamp Black= This is a must see, an excellent group exhibition making good with what would seem to be too common a theme, " the distant edges of our perception: shadows, bright light, dark space and deep holes" I didn't see the whole thing; for instance Jeremiah Barber's performance happened another day, but what I did see was very good. Carrie Hott has two excellent bodies of work present, one, a set of sculptures which tease excellent abstraction out of Hott's research-based practice, and a video work in which a text about the history of lighting and its opposite is read over archival images and images of Hott's work. Hillary Wiedemann also has great works here, presenting two photo-based projects involving the hard to wrap one's mind around idea of sunrise on Mars, and a video in which home-made telescope optics wreak havoc on the sensor of a digital camera. The urge and denial of our instinct to capture and record is key to these strong works. The incidental shots of concert lighting in Dario Robleto’s photos taken by fans trying to capture a concert work along similar lines and are nice, but their faux-polaroid presentation seems forced and unnecessary, muddying what is I think a strong set of images. Definitely worth a visit.
