Weekly Outlook
Its a pretty quiet week out there.. I suggest seeing Rick Prelinger at the CCA Wattis on Friday, and Courtney Johnson, Maysha Mohamedi, Sarah Hotchkiss in Folding the Blanket of Time at Park Life also that night. I loved Mohamedi's work in the recent Stephen Wirtz show, and Hotchkiss's in the current show at Pro Arts in Oakland, so I'm excited about this grouping. Closures! Disasters! The art scene in peril! A few points. 1. Rent is too damn high. Not just for artists. The city has some major issues which need to be addressed by all. Let's fight against the Ellis act and not loose our focus worrying about Google Glass or expensive toast. Let's quit preaching to the choir and do something. 2. Let's tell the whole story, not just skip key details to suit our narrative. Saying 'there has been no surge of new spaces to fill [the recent closure's] absences' is patently false. But to think that the dozen+ project spaces and galleries recently open can take the closed spaces' place is also incorrect (however optimistic I am about their collective potential) 3. Want to do something to help the scene survive? GO TO MORE SHOWS AT A VARIETY OF SPACES. New and old, ones that show established artists and scrappy one-night affairs, all wish for more people through the door. Here's hoping making art viewing a priority is contagious. Editor's Picks
