Weekly Outlook
Another sorta late note from me, apologies. Its a busy week with an art fair of sorts going on down south. The Silicon Valley fair doesn't have the roster of galleries I or I think its participants would expect with both good contemporary art galleries and, well, other ones. I think theres plenty of hedging going on as the waters are tested. Can the new money be tempted into buying work? I'll try to keep it brief with two thoughts. One, its hard to create an interest in art in a world not terribly concerned about arts education. To expect someone to care and spend money on art simply because they have a lot of money skips a few steps maybe. And two, say what you will about the gallery lineup for the Silicon Valley fair (chock full of galleries I personally would have a stomach ache spending too much time in), at least there is an honesty in the way it is approaching tech. We don't want a conversation per se. We don't want to make/show the often myopic and overly simplistic tech-art. We simply want more money, tech money, to circulate in the art world. It is a selfish, commercial desire, not some effort at broadly enriching the bay area (though this could be argued as a side effect). To go to the doorstep of tech and try to bluntly convince them to buy things is honest. I wish all involved the best of luck. Okay, some suggestions. I highly recommend "MYSTERIUM: music/film conversations between Rick Bahto & Paul Clipson" at ATA on Sunday, and James Benning's lecture at SFAI next Monday. Editor's Picks
