Weekly Outlook
Saturday is a busy day around the bay, with open studios at the San Francisco Art Institute Graduate studios in the Dogpatch, Kindling curated by Anzfer Farms at Campfire Gallery. A pair of awesome shows at Important Projects, including a continuation of a show curated by the nice LA folks of Jancar Jones at a scale reflecting the unique Oakland gallery. Last week an art fair happened. Did you go? If you did, please send me your impressions as I myself missed it. Send comments to mrharbour@gmail.com. I was in Dallas; while I missed the Bush paintings I did manage to catch the mega huge Julian Schnabel and Richard Phillips shows at the Dallas Contemporary. They were, well... terrible: overblown, ridiculous really, but despite these and the large Shepard Fairey mural outside, and the Porsche on display next to the DJ didn't help things. But Dallas wasn't all bad. I managed to make it to The Reading Room, "A project space which, through occasional readings, performances and installations, will explore the many ways in which text and image interact." The show there was excellent, Nicolas G Miller: Common Sense, a mostly bare gallery featuring a sound work on vinyl played through an attractive subwoofer. The piece, made of the '.1' of Dolby 5.1 sound aka the sub-bass stripped from Spielberg films, was quite splendid. In every city, however risk averse, however supportive of the most sensational and money-eyed culture, awesome things bubble up. Its a thrilling idea that lurking out there are so many excellent projects and communities waiting to be found. Editor's Picks
