Artcards brings you to art May 27, 2014

Weekly Outlook

It’s a quiet pre-summer, post holiday, late month week around town. Highlights include Important Projects on Saturday (Chelsea Culp / Alex Mackin Dolan & Jasper Spicero) and K.R.M. Mooney at n/a opening on Sunday.

A few last words on Art Market … I received plenty of feedback about this year’s fair. It says something that so many top tier galleries felt more inclined to take a risk on a fair half-filled with furniture (FOG) than to do Art Market. Art Market has multiple audiences, while it certainly wants to seem legitimate amongst artists, curators and the like who don’t buy work, its primary audience is collectors, whose opinion is gauged in terms of sales, so whether it was a success in these terms is hard to tell. Amongst those who I spoke to, the standouts were Johansson Projects, CULT, Romer Young, Ever Gold and Steven Wolf. No one I talked to mentioned any of the visiting galleries (except for curiosity RH Contemporary), and generally most I heard from were disappointed with the quality of the art on display with a few blue chip exceptions outside of the aforementioned galleries.
