Artcards brings you to art October 7, 2014

Weekly Outlook

Many things escape my Sauron-esque eye on the Bay Area's art events. One thing whose creation I totally missed was the opening of the first Service Industries exhibition. From their website:

"Service Industries is a series of galleries inside bars, restaurants, hotels, and other public venues that displays art by artists with jobs in the service industry. It is an open platform, a free idea, and a prompt for anyone to create their own exhibition space within any space that provides a service to the public. All Service Industries galleries will remain autonomous."

The first one has opened, a work by Daniel Bouthot curated by Marion Cousin at the Little Shamrock bar in San Francisco. In one of the oldest bars in San Francisco there is a vitrine with a device working away to make bitcoin (to be split among the bar's staff as a 'tip' of sorts). This idea (both the piece and 'Service Industries' as a project) is very in keeping with my current thoughts about art in our city, its perseverance and ability to 'get in where it fits in'.

There are a few events this week I am excited about. One, Joan Jonas is speaking at CCA tomorrow. This event needs no press really; it will be a packed house, and the talk will I suspect be one of the most talked about lectures of the year.

And Saturday, Sofia Cordova's solo show at Royal NoneSuch Gallery in Oakland opens. Cordova's is a practice which gets better as it gets stranger; recent travel and residencies make the timing of this show perfect.

And Sunday a group show opens at Manresa Gallery, a venue I've not been to yet. Housed in St. Ignatius Church, Todd Bura, Rebeca Bollinger, Bryson Gill, and Ranu Mukherjee are making commissioned works responding to the church's collection and history.
