Weekly Outlook

-----

Its a super busy week, with each day jam-packed with shows and talks. Tonight's talk with Erin Shirreff at the San Francisco Art Institute should be good. And first Thursday is silly-busy; downtown and specifically 49 Geary have a ton of openings which might as well be visited on your way to the highlight of the evening, Zarouhie Abdalian's first solo show at Altman Siegel.

What I'm most excited about this week is the opening of a new space curated by recent Bay Area transplant Juana Berrío, Kiria Koula. It is a gallery & bookstore but not necessarily in that (or any) order as their boundary between books and arts is a permeable one. The inaugural has work by two artist whose work I am familiar with but haven't seen in person, José León Cerrillo and Ilja Karilampi in the gallery, and artist/publisher Paul Chan has organized the bookstore. There are quite a few new spaces opening all of a sudden, just when the landscape was looking bleakest. They range in style and mission, like anything else this new crop will be a mixed bag but I suspect a few more gems such as Kiria Koula will come into being by the end of the year (fingers crossed).

Some notes

If I'm missing your event on Curiously Direct's calendar, its more likely an oversight on my part than it is a judgement; please let me know about your shows, performances, talks etc., and ones that you think others would like to know about at curiouslydirect@gmail.com
