Four weeks ago I received an anonymous postcard in the mail with a mysterious little poem in the back that goes:
And I would share something,
Something beautiful with you.
I gaze at you distantly.
And should I?
Should I approach?
For I would share something,
Something beautiful and true.
At this day and age when picking up the phone is too much to ask for, it’s a miracle to actually receive something personal in the mail. With my name and address neatly handwritten on the postcard, these are definitely not junk mail. And so I pinned up the image of a naked man on my kitchen wall, until the next one arrived the following week. Then for the following 3 weeks, I’ve been coming home to receive a similar postcard in my mailbox and each one with a slightly different photo and poem. Who is this person sending me these eerily exotic postcards? I thought they were fan mail. At the fourth card, I couldn’t resist and looked up Abe’s Penny, which is printed in small type on the back, and the mystery is solved. They are two sisters in the name of Anna and Tess Knoebel who publishes a micro-magazine in the form of postcards in Brooklyn , working with photographers and writers who submit to their independent press. Every week I came home to a mysterious surprise, but I guess the story ends here. Next month beings a whole new chapter of handpicked photographs and words. Somehow this set of postcards fell in perfectly with the moment that I needed to fall in, a ghostly romance, if you know what I mean.
