Mobile phones were made for convenience, and cellular technology has universally transformed our engagement with the world. It is possible to remain completely solitary; physically, mentally, spatially, while simultaneously engage completely within your own mobile network. The notion of photography as an art form hasn’t changed but its mode of transmission and its potential for ubiquitous perception has with the rise of smartphones.
Since cell phones are constantly carried by their owners, they allow one to capture an image at any time, and with the undeniable prevalence of 3G internet connections, these images can be instantly shared with large audiences via social networking platforms. Mobile Uploads is an attempt to concentrate these images into a more intimate — yet still maintaining the live and constantly ‘uploading’ — environment.
The Mobile Uploads Project is organized by Amanda Schmitt and Krysta Eder, featuring photographs submitted directly from camera phone users all of the world. The ongoing exhibition features a carefully selected rotation of these JPEGs, exhibited through a digital projection.
TO SUBMIT:
Please send photos, in JPEG format, that you have taken with your iPhone, Blackberry, or any other smartphone device. Please send the well-composed, the blurry, the too-dark, the too-light, the boring, the incredible, the dumb, and the clever. A torn up poster, a lone high heel on the street, a child pressing their face against a car window, the reflections in the city at sundown….all of these objects and moments are potential material for an interesting mobile upload, a picture taken from a camera phone and ready to post on the internet.
